The Strata of Hearing

Where are you standing to hear what the Lord is saying? Or should I ask where are you sitting or walking? The reality of one’s experience continues to inform thoughts and behaviours that affect our daily living. The actions that we do are because of the chemical responses within the brain from the external stimuli in the environment. We impulsively react to sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste; we do not readily have a consciousness of our actions in relation to the space around us. It must be noted that hearing and seeing are the two (2) senses that are discussed more and have become the basis of interpreting behaviours.

The salient issue is to define the transition of thought to behaviour; how does one arrive at an action and sometimes realize that there has been a difference in the expectation of the principal idea/s. The early childhood days were the informing years and the primary school days were the forging years which because the foundation for the rest of our lives. We are usually stimulated by either what we see before we hear or what we hear before we see and sometimes, we respond with the hearing and the seeing at the same time. As adults we are in a space where there is the confusion and the agony of determining the truth of what is to be done having the turmoil of what is said and what is heard. We surely have difficulties in shifting from the physical, social and emotional trimmings of our upbringing. We are dared to change; we are deemed to be transformed.

In our daily experiences, conversations are generally misquoted and misrepresentation because of the sentences and phrases that we hear through the many sieves of our socialization. The several and different ways of speaking, and the many ways of hearing what is being said create a milieu of options to choose as the instruction. There are several noises in our environment that we give our attention to, and we often are not able to decode the words that represent the information needed. In addition, the language sets are different and cause barriers in our communicating. This may engender an explosion of emotions that further displays conflict with a breakdown of unity.

With this backdrop, it is very interesting how we determine and establish that we have heard God or the Lord. How do we perceive the mind of the speaker when we are shrouded with thoughts of other voices? How do we put down out preferences and emotions to be rational and engaging? How do we accept the differences in our development that would obviously impact our expectations? How do eventually hear what He says and do what He says?

There is a continuous conversation about hearing the voice and knowing that the Lord has truly spoken in various context of situations. We basically hear God when we want to make a decision that fits our own ideals and judgements. We decide to hear the Spirit when there is need to justify our position and action. We tend to hear Him to exonerate someone or oneself. Is this the reality of the voice of God to mankind. My discussion begs to enquire of our asking during each day as we walk out His purpose and to define His might and power. The demonstration of His word is for the edification of the Body of Christ and that ought to be a hallmark to determine the validity of the voice of God.

Evidently, we have to accept that God is going to be talking to us in the midst of the daily issues – the disappointments, the negativities, the problems, the indecisions. We have to have the mindset to be sensitive to desire to hear the Spirit in those times, but it is not a belief or expectation that God would turn up in unsavoury occasions, Yes, that is when we need to have direction and order; that is when we need ways to alleviate the mayhem and disorder; that is when we need to have His peace to continue in His joy, a position where there is no bias or prejudice. We have to believe it is then He really speaks; let’s reflect on Genesis 1:2 – He spoke in the midst of the darkness and void and no form. His voice is to first break through the uncertainties then give instruction for restoration and reconciliation.
The voice of the Lord shatters the enemy, it does not make enemies.
Let’s hear to abound in the unity of the Spirit so we can walk in liberty that not in bondage.
